Fire Service Awards
Mayor Walker and Council presented firefighters Andrew Marshall and James Thomas with their 10-year service pins, and District Chief Brent Sterling with his 20-year pin. On behalf of Council, Staff and all residents, thank you for your dedication and commitment to Tay Township and our Fire Department.
S.S. Keewatin recognized for “cultural” significance to Port McNicoll
This recognition comes after a presentation was made to Council in January from the Keep Keewatin Home Campaign indicating their interest in ensuring that the S.S. Keewatin remains in Port McNicoll, and requested a designation. Planning and Development Services Staff and the Heritage Committee completed a review of the Ontario Heritage Act and determined that since the S.S. Keewatin is moveable and not in a permanent location, it does not meet the requirements of the OHA for designation. However, the General Manager, Protective and Development Services and the Chair of the Tay Heritage Committee agreed that Council could “Recognize” S.S. Keewatin for its cultural significance to the Port McNicoll area and include it in the Municipal Heritage Register. A commemorative plaque will also be installed to illustrate the contributions the ship has made to the heritage of the Township.
New parking rules around Tay Shores school zone
For the safety of motorists and pedestrians, Council adopted changes to on street parking around the Tay Shores School Zone. On street parking will not be permitted on Jephson Street in Victoria Harbour Monday to Friday between 8:00 am - 5:00 pm from September 1 to June 30 excluding holidays. The intent is to calm congestion in this area during high peak school drop-off and pick-up times. The no parking area will prevent vehicles from parking on both sides of Jephson Street. Resident only trailer parking available at Victoria Harbour boat launch
The areas of 110 and 145 Albert Street will now include “Resident Only Parking” for vehicles with trailers. Council made the decision after hearing from the community about the need for the boat launch to be more accessible to Tay Township residents and property owners. The free permits will be available at the end of April for all residents and property owners. Staff are currently working at producing the permit stickers, and will provide more information in the coming weeks on how to obtain a permit.
Fireworks By-law amended to include New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day
The amended by-law now permits consumer fireworks to be to set off on Victoria Day, Canada Day, News Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and the three days immediately preceding and/or following each of these days between dusk and 11:00 p.m. Fireworks are not permitted to be set off during any other dates or times. Victoria Harbour Wastewater Treatment Plant
Council received information from Tatham Engineering Ltd., about capacity recommendations and technology options for the Victoria Harbour Wastewater Treatment Plant. The report provided information about capacity recommendations and technology options as Council works through the process of ensuring we have wastewater servicing capacity for new developments in the Victoria Harbour area.
