GBDSS students unveil mural representing vision of reconciliation and hope

Since January 2017, students at Georgian Bay District Secondary School (GBDSS) in Midland have been working in partnership with Tay Township to create a mural for the Tay pump house in Waubaushene. The mural, titled Nikeyaa noojimowin miikanaans Along the Healing Path, will be officially unveiled on June 17 at 2 p.m.

“The students have worked incredibly hard to realize a collaborative vision - bringing awareness to Truth and Reconciliation - realized through the artwork of Richelle Chartrand McCue, a GBDSS art student,” says John Playford, GBDSS Principal. “It is our hope that our community will see it as a step towards reconciliation.”

Inspiration for the mural was taken from the First Nations, Métis & Inuit Education Association of Ontario’s Elders Gathering. The mural includes the Seven Grandfather Teachings and represents a number of indigenous themes.

The mural was created with support from Tay Township, C.C. Tatham and Associates Ltd., Huronia Steel, Midland Home Depot, Pinnacle Graphix, and Root Cellar Signs.

The event will take place at 3 Pine Street, Waubaushene.
