Port McNicoll celebrates 100 years since incorporation in 1917
In celebration of Port McNicoll’s centennial, Huronia Museum has been posting historic images of the community daily to its website, including photographs of Main (Talbot) Street circa 1915; Flat Point, also called Paradise Point, at the newly named Patterson Park; and the Keewatin. According to the museum’s website, “some of the photos are very well known and some will be new to many people.” View the photos at huroniamuseum.com.
“The story of Port McNicoll is all tied in with the development of the Canadian Pacific Railway,” said 101-year-old James McCannell, the oldest living Port McNicoll resident (as cited in the Midland Mirror). Midland Mirror also published a feature to celebrate the milestone. Read Without the Assiniboia and Keewatin, Port McNicoll would not have been created at midlandmirror.com.
The Port McNicoll Centenary Committee invites the community and visitors to participate in the four-day celebration. Activities scheduled for this weekend (August 4 to 7) include live music, parade, soapbox derby, fireworks, and heritage driving tour.
Visit the Port McNicoll Centenary Committee’s Facebook page and website for event details. The committee is seeking volunteers to help set up tables and chairs on Friday, August 4 from 9 to 11 a.m. Contact Paul at 705-543-9858 to volunteer.
