Tay Township celebrates Grand Opening of Fire Hall 2 (Old Fort)

Tay Township ON: Today, Tay Township held the Grand Opening of Fire Hall 2 (Old Fort). The Honourable Bruce Stanton, MP, Simcoe North; Jill Dunlop on behalf of Patrick Brown, MPP, Simcoe North; Mayor Scott Warnock; Council members; Fire Chief Brian Thomas; volunteer firefighters; and community members attended the event. Council members and firefighters from neighbouring communities also attended.

The $1.97 million project – identified as a priority in the Township’s 2013 Fire Master Plan – addresses challenges such as limited equipment storage and health and safety concerns.

Fire Hall 2 includes six truck bays to house equipment (pumper truck and tanker/rescue truck) from the original hall as well as a spills response trailer and off-road truck with skid unit that were stored off site. The project also features a 30,000-litre cistern for rural fire fighting water storage. Additionally, the 8,000-square-foot space accommodates storage of the Public Works department’s seasonal equipment.

“In addition to increased storage, the new fire hall will reduce occupational health risks for our firefighters” said Fire Chief Brian Thomas. “It features a designated space to store contaminated personal protective equipment that is separate from eating and training facilities."

The newly constructed Fire Hall 2 located at 2201 Old Fort Road replaces its neighbouring fire hall (2224 Old Fort Road) – originally constructed in 1975-1976.
