Tay Township recognizes historic districts with new street signs

Tay, Ontario: Tay Township is installing new street signs to showcase the community’s historic districts.

Tay has more than 300 century-old buildings in its four larger settlement areas (Port McNicoll, Victoria Harbour, Waubaushene and Waverley) and over 100 century buildings in rural areas. The Tay Heritage Committee mapped the distribution of century buildings, identified clusters, and outlined a historic district for each settlement area. Approximately 50 street signs are being installed to mark the boundaries of the four historic districts and to replace existing aging signage.

“This new program promotes Tay's rich heritage and complements the recently launched century house plaque program,” said Mayor Scott Warnock. The century house plaque program offers residents who own houses in Tay—built 100 or more years ago—the opportunity to apply for a custom-made historical marker commemorating their property's long life.
